Backyard Ultra (Lite) : Otway
Backyard Ultra (Lite) is the second annual event presented by Caledonia Nordic Race Teams at Otway (8141 Otway Rd). The event is a fundraiser for the CNSC Race Teams and offers two main classes: Recreation and Almost an Ultra. Ages are determined as of December 31, 2026.
Recreation classes include Solo entries for participants aged 14 and over, and relay teams of two with members aged 12 and over. Each relay team member completes four loops in any order. The Recreation format uses repeating 3.35 km loops with the permitted "required finish time" reduced by one minute each lap (starting at 30 minutes and decreasing to 23 minutes). The Recreation competition is capped at eight loops, for a maximum distance of 26.8 km. Awards are planned for the first male and female across the line in the Recreation solo class, and for the first relay team, with other category prizes and draw prizes awarded every 30 minutes. Finish line snacks and drinks will be provided, and the event includes music, food, and an opportunity to try biathlon with an eco aim.
The Almost an Ultra class is open to participants aged 16 and over and continues after the Recreation classes conclude. In this class the lap time continues to decrease by one minute each lap; winners are the last male and female to complete a lap, or the first across the line on the final lap that participants choose to run.
Fees listed in the registration information are: Recreation solo $30, Recreation team $50, Almost an Ultra $50. A second relay team member must register separately for $3 plus the Tier 3 license fee. Early registration is available online until October 24 and on-site registration is noted as available on a specific date. Teams may be mixed by age and gender.
