Backcountry Rise, Toutle WA

Backcountry Rise is a trail race set within the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, using the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center above Coldwater Lake as base camp. The event takes place in the northern blast zone area affected by the 1980 eruption and features high mountain lakes, creeks, ridgeline views and exposed, remote terrain. Wildlife reported in the area includes mountain goats, elk, deer, bear, cougar and soaring raptors.

The event offers three loop course options:

• 50K single loop with significant climbs and ridgeline views
• 20 mile loop with large climbs and sweeping descents
• Half marathon loop around Coldwater Lake

The 50K has an experience requirement that must be met prior to race day: a prior trail ultramarathon finish or a Backcountry Rise 20 mile finish. Minimum gear requirements are enforced; for the 50K these include a minimum fluid capacity of about 35 to 40 ounces (1 liter), a lightweight jacket, an emergency blanket and a safety whistle. The 20 mile and half marathon require a fluid capacity of roughly 12 to 20 ounces, with a jacket and emergency blanket required if the forecast indicates precipitation.

Race registration fees vary by date; examples include the 50K from $165 to $190, the 20 mile from $125 to $150 and the half marathon from $105 to $125. Camping at the Science and Learning Center and day use facilities are included with registration. The venue provides running water, flush toilets and indoor day use space but no showers or on site fuel or electric vehicle chargers.
