Trail Running in the Wiltshire Countryside
The Avebury8 Nine is a trail race of approximately 9 miles set in the rural landscape of Wiltshire. The event begins and ends in the village of Avebury, with the Race HQ situated at the Avebury Sports & Social Club adjacent to the historic stone circle. The route starts on Bray Street and directs participants north toward Yatesbury Lane, passing through Yatesbury before returning to the Avebury High Street for a finish near the club house.
The course features a variety of surfaces and terrain types including:
- Chalk tracks and rutted paths
- Short tarmac sections
- Wet footpaths
- A traverse of the neolithic Windmill Hill
The route includes a downhill section through fields leading back into the village. Participants can expect mud and puddles depending on the weather conditions. The event is licensed by the ARC and conducted under UK Athletics Rules. To participate, runners must be at least 17 years old on the day of the race.
This event serves as a fixture in the Wiltshire Off Road Running League (WORRL). Participants receive a hand-thrown commemorative mug upon completion, and refreshments such as cakes are provided at the finish. All profits from the race are donated to the Wiltshire & Bath Air Ambulance. The race utilizes electronic chip timing for all participants.
