3 Peaks Mountain Race : event overview
The 3 Peaks Mountain Race is a trail running event around Ōtepoti, Dunedin that visits three named peaks: Flagstaff/Te Whanaupaki, Swampy/Whāwhāraupō and Mt Cargill/Kapuketaumahaka. There are multiple course options and one ultra distance that adds Pulpit Rock in the Silverpeaks.
Distances offered:
- 56 km 3 Peaks Plus 1 with an extended Silverpeaks section.
- 26 km The 3 Peaks run or walk.
- 11 km Race the Summit run or walk.
Registration and mandatory gear checks take place the day before the races at Chingford Park; briefings are held before each event. Runners assemble in Woodhaugh Gardens or at Chingford Park for transport to start locations. Limited portable toilets are available at Woodhaugh Gardens.
All finishers receive a medal. The finish area at Chingford Park includes food, coffee and children’s entertainment. Prize giving includes cash and trophies for overall placings and age categories. Cash prizes for the 56 km and 26 km overall first, second and third placings are NZD 300, 200 and 100 respectively; the 11 km top prizes are NZD 150, 100 and 50. Additional cash awards include King and Queen of the Mountain prizes for the first male and female to Swampy Summit who finish the 26 km.
Transport from the finish back to start is offered by a small bus. The event is organised by Leith Harrier and Athletic Club and is an UTMB index race approved by relevant agencies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
